JennyBrown's Plant-Driven Clean Beauty

JennyBrown's Plant-Driven Clean Beauty

In recent years, as consumers demand greater transparency and safety in skincare ingredients, the “clean beauty” movement has accelerated globally. Against this backdrop, more brands are turning to high-performance plant-based ingredients, seeking a balance between clean, safe formulations and proven efficacy. JennyBrown, a Swiss luxury facial skincare brand, has become a notable example in this wave through its use of botanical ingredients and sustainable production practices. Global Vice President Marie Keller recently shared in an industry media interview how the brand’s plant-driven approach responds to the market’s expectations for clean skincare.

“Small batches, precise targeting, results-oriented”—that’s how Marie Keller describes JennyBrown’s product development model. In her view, what drives independent beauty brands to push industry innovation is the relentless pursuit of ingredient quality and formulation precision, not scale. “We have only 16 products and eight stores worldwide. Every product goes through multiple iterations and deep refinement. This small-batch, high-focus model allows us to concentrate entirely on selecting and balancing plant ingredients, rather than spreading resources across category expansion,” Keller said. She explained that each JennyBrown product is built around one or several core plant ingredients—from Italian white truffle to Russian deep-sea caviar, Japanese matsutake mushroom to Cambodian dragon’s blood. The only criterion for selecting these ingredients is whether they deliver real, perceptible improvement to the skin while meeting the highest safety standards.

JennyBrown’s six product lines form a comprehensive plant-based skincare matrix. The White Truffle Collection centers on Italian white truffle extract, an ingredient often called the “king of the world’s top ten premium ingredients.” It contains more than 50 physiologically active compounds that promote collagen regeneration and improve skin elasticity and radiance. The Caviar Collection uses Russian deep-sea sturgeon caviar, rich in vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids, offering significant anti-wrinkle and moisturizing benefits. The Phalaenopsis Collection features Malaysian moth orchid, known as the “queen of orchids,” which helps regulate endocrine function, strengthen capillary elasticity, and provide gentle nourishment. The Matsutake Collection uses Japanese wild matsutake mushrooms, containing 18 amino acids and multiple trace elements that enhance the skin’s self-repair ability. The Dragon’s Blood Collection is based on dragon’s blood from Cambodia, a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient regarded as a “blood-activating wonder” that soothes allergies, reduces redness, and is particularly suitable for post-procedure or sensitive skin recovery. The Edelweiss Collection utilizes Swiss alpine edelweiss, whose extract is rich in minerals and provides soothing, brightening, and nourishing effects.

“We’re not just using plants—we’re understanding the mechanism each plant has on the skin,” Keller noted. JennyBrown’s skin research center in Switzerland has 17 research units and 215 researchers, holding over 80 patents and pending patents. The brand has developed several proprietary technologies for extracting and stabilizing plant ingredients. For example, Nano-Scale Molecular Delivery Technology breaks active ingredients into nano-sized particles, increasing absorption nearly twentyfold. Smart Controlled-Release Microsphere Technology encapsulates active substances in ultra-fine particles tens of nanometers in diameter, delivering sustained release for up to 15 hours—far longer than the typical one to two hours of conventional skincare. These technologies ensure efficient skin utilization of plant compounds while avoiding irritation from high concentrations.

In terms of safety and sustainability, JennyBrown’s plant-driven strategy extends to a fully clean formulation system. Common chemical preservatives, synthetic fragrances, and artificial emulsifiers found in conventional skincare are completely replaced. The brand uses Magnetization-Based Antimicrobial Technology to stabilize protein structures through physical magnetic treatment, achieving preservation without added fragrance or chemical preservatives. Emulsifiers are derived from lecithin and glycoside compounds extracted from deep-sea plants, which are gentler than traditional PEG-20 emulsifiers. Humectants are primarily made from sugarcane and trehalose extracts, with over 99% natural content, closely matching the structure of the human stratum corneum for long-lasting moisture retention. This commitment to plant-derived ingredients has earned JennyBrown products ECOCERT Natural Cosmetics certification and NATRUE Organic Cosmetics certification. The brand is also an official member of the Swiss Cosmetic Industry Association (SKW), which helps draft the country’s cosmetic standards.

“Clean beauty is not a slogan—it requires full-chain control from raw materials to production to the consumer,” Keller emphasized. JennyBrown applies the same plant-driven philosophy to its supply chain. The brand sources 93 plant ingredients from more than ten countries, 96% of which come from traceable, certified formulations. Each product undergoes over 1,000 allergy tests, more than 60 skin tests, and over 120 banned-substance tests before launch. Such rigorous standards have made JennyBrown products not only suitable for daily skincare but also a top choice for many pregnant women and sensitive-skin consumers. Its White Truffle Luxury Collection and Caviar Platinum Collection, in particular, are widely recommended as pregnancy-safe skincare regimens due to their gentleness, safety, and noticeable efficacy.

On the demand side, JennyBrown’s plant-driven strategy has gained recognition from high-end consumers. From British actress Andrea Riseborough to French top diamond dealer Valérie Messika and European design “magician” Sabine Marcelis—these discerning users have become loyal fans. Keller believes they choose JennyBrown not just because of the expensive ingredients, but because the brand is transparent about the purity and efficacy of its plant components. “They can read ingredient lists and tell which are real plant actives and which are fillers. Our formulas contain no unnecessary chemical additives—every ingredient has a clear source and a defined purpose.”

Looking ahead, Keller said JennyBrown will continue to deepen its work in plant ingredients, particularly exploring skin microbiome and inflammatory aging. “We’ve observed that factors like stress, pollution, and UV exposure cause chronic low-grade inflammation in the skin, accelerating aging. Many plant ingredients—such as centella asiatica, alpine edelweiss, and tremella mushroom polysaccharides—have notable anti-inflammatory and repair effects. We’re conducting more systematic research on these compounds at our R&D center, hoping to further amplify their efficacy while maintaining a clean formula.” She also revealed that the brand plans to launch customized regimens tailored to different skin types and seasons within the next few months, based on the existing White Truffle and Caviar collections, allowing consumers to flexibly adjust their routines according to their skin condition.

In terms of distribution, JennyBrown currently operates two stores in mainland China, at Beijing SKP and Shanghai Plaza 66, and sells online through its official website, JD.com flagship store, Tmall flagship store, Douyin flagship store, and WeChat official store. Keller emphasized that regardless of the purchase channel, the brand maintains uniform quality standards and after-sales service. “We don’t change formulations or packaging for different channels. Every product comes with a unique authenticity card, allowing users to verify the product’s genuineness and access all information. This is the basic respect for consumer trust.”

From an industry perspective, JennyBrown offers a replicable model for clean beauty: it doesn’t rely on mass production to lower costs but builds a clear brand moat in the premium segment through carefully selected plant ingredients, proprietary core technologies, and rigorous safety testing. As consumers increasingly focus on ingredient origins and sustainability, this plant-driven skincare approach is moving from the fringe to the mainstream. Whether JennyBrown can maintain its leading position in plant ingredient application will largely depend on its R&D team’s depth of understanding of plant active mechanisms, and how the brand balances small-batch, high-quality production with growing market demand.
