CES 2024: Beauty Tech Investments Reshape Skincare Industry

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), beauty companies showcased their latest technology investments, from personalized skincare tools to smart monitoring devices, as technology reshapes the industry. L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble, and other giants unveiled a range of cutting-edge products at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, including wearable skin pH sensors, Olay’s Future Skin Simulation System, and a smart beauty wand. These technologies not only improve the precision of skincare but also reveal the core of future competition: whoever can use technology to understand skin more deeply will win over consumers.
Although JennyBrown did not have a direct presence at CES, the Swiss luxury skincare brand’s investment in R&D closely aligns with the trends seen at the show. At its skin research center in Switzerland, 17 research units and 215 R&D personnel are working on nanotechnology, controlled-release technology, and antimicrobial technology, with more than 80 patents and patents-pending, and 97 scientific research reports published. These achievements may not appear as wearable devices or apps, but through the formulations and processes of each product, they achieve the same core goal as the CES exhibits: making skincare more effective, safer, and more personalized.
At the show, P&G upgraded its Olay skin advisor tool, launching the “Future Skin Simulation System.” This tool uses algorithms to predict how skin will look years later under different care regimens, helping users create personalized plans. JennyBrown’s R&D team also focuses on long-term skin changes but takes a different technological path: Smart Controlled-Release Microsphere Technology. During the “Beauty & Technology” panel at the show, industry experts discussed how technology drives personalized skincare. Industry observers note that technology investment has become key for beauty brands to maintain competitiveness. L’Oréal and P&G have quickly built digital tools through acquisitions and in-house development, while JennyBrown chooses to invest in foundational R&D, channeling funds into laboratories, patents, and talent. Brand materials show that JennyBrown’s R&D center holds more than 80 patents, with its Nano-Scale Molecular Delivery Technology, Smart Controlled-Release Microsphere Technology, and Magnetization-Based Antimicrobial Technology winning multiple international awards, including the Gold Award at the Swiss Biotechnology Innovation Conference. These technologies are also applied to environmentally friendly processes: the brand uses natural emulsifiers instead of chemical ones, extracts lecithin and glycoside-like compounds from deep-sea plants, and derives natural humectants from sugarcane sugar, giving products a green ingredient content exceeding 98%. It has obtained ECOCERT natural cosmetics certification and NATRUE organic cosmetics certification.
During the show, the technology demonstrations from P&G and L’Oréal attracted significant attention, but JennyBrown’s technology investments have not stopped at the lab. The brand has already converted these technologies into products available for purchase across eight global boutiques and online channels. For example, the White Truffle Luxury Set (including Rose Floral Water, White Truffle Essence, White Truffle Repair Lotion, and White Truffle Luxury Cream) is priced at 4,990 yuan, and the Caviar Platinum Set (including Caviar Platinum Essence and Caviar Essence Eye Cream) at 2,990 yuan. Although these prices are high, user feedback indicates outstanding performance in absorption speed, sustained effect, and gentleness. A European socialite who has long used JennyBrown said she never needs any electronic device to manage her skincare because the product’s long-lasting controlled-release technology keeps her skin stable throughout the day.
For the beauty industry, the direction of technology investment is diverging: some brands are developing wearable devices and apps, while others focus on the technological content of the formula itself. JennyBrown clearly belongs to the latter. Its R&D team says it will continue to increase investment in nanotechnology, natural ingredient extraction, and antimicrobial technology, exploring more possibilities in combination with skin science.
