JennyBrown Global VP on Clean Ingredients, Safety, and Sustainability

In the high-end skincare sector, the balance between natural ingredients, safety, and efficacy has always been key to earning and maintaining consumer trust. Swiss luxury brand JennyBrown recently shared its approach to ingredient sourcing, R&D, and sustainability with industry publication Cosmetics Design through its global vice president, Marie Keller. The conversation went beyond a standard brand introduction, diving into several of the most pressing issues in skincare today: clean ingredients, targeted efficacy, environmental responsibility, and user safety.

Keller first addressed the common question of whether natural ingredients are inherently less effective. She noted that since its founding in 1984, JennyBrown has always drawn its core active ingredients from natural food sources, but has never relied on the “natural” label alone. From Italian white truffles to Russian deep-sea caviar, Japanese matsutake mushrooms to Cambodian dragon’s blood, each ingredient is selected for its scientifically verified bioactive compounds. White truffles, for example, contain more than 50 physiologically active substances that help stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis. Using its patented nano-scale molecular delivery technology, JennyBrown reduces white truffle extract to nano-sized particles, increasing absorption by 20 times, delivering precise anti-aging and brightening effects while preserving the ingredient’s natural properties.

The underlying logic of this technical approach is to solve the common problems of stability and absorption associated with natural ingredients. Keller explained that the JennyBrown Skin Research Center in Switzerland holds over 80 patents. One of them, Smart Controlled-Release Microsphere Technology, encapsulates active ingredients in ultra-fine particles only tens of nanometers in diameter, allowing them to release continuously on the skin for up to 15 hours—far longer than the one to two hours typical of conventional products. This means users get sustained repair support from a single application without needing to reapply frequently. The slow-release mechanism is especially suited for mature skin needing continuous anti-aging care and for sensitive skin types with compromised barriers due to environmental stress.

When the conversation turned to safety and allergy risks, Keller emphasized the brand’s core difference in formulation design. In traditional skincare, emulsifiers, preservatives, and fragrances are the three main sources of skin irritation. JennyBrown has taken a different path: using its patented PCT Plant Stem Cell Culture Technology to extract lecithin and glycoside-like compounds from deep-sea plants as natural emulsifiers, replacing conventional chemical emulsifiers. It also uses plant-derived humectants from sugarcane and trehalose instead of hyaluronic acid or butylene glycol, achieving over 99% natural content with near-zero skin irritation. For preservation, the brand replaces chemical preservatives with Magnetization-Based Antimicrobial Technology, which stabilizes protein charges through magnetic treatment, ensuring product shelf life without compromising its properties. These combined technologies allow JennyBrown products to meet ECOCERT natural cosmetics certification, NATRUE organic cosmetics certification, and the brand is one of the standard-setting members of the Swiss Cosmetic and Detergent Association (SKW).

Addressing the growing demand for pregnancy-safe skincare, Keller pointed out that the JennyBrown White Truffle Luxury Collection and the Caviar Platinum Collection are two core product lines specifically designed for sensitive skin and pregnancy. Both collections have undergone over 1,000 allergy tests, more than 60 skin tests, and over 120 tests for banned ingredients, ensuring that every user—including pregnant and nursing women—can enjoy a safe, gentle skincare experience. The brand has also been selected for the Victoria Grand Prix Top 10 Skincare for Pregnancy list in France, an award with strict criteria that verify ingredient safety, clinical gentleness, and real-world user feedback.

On environmental and social responsibility, Keller said JennyBrown’s practices go beyond slogans. She introduced the brand’s ongoing Global Sustainability Plan, which aims to reduce absolute carbon emissions by 51% over the next 15 years. The plan covers green packaging, green processes, water conservation, and a commitment to no animal testing. She noted that the brand uses recyclable materials for packaging and strictly controls energy consumption during production, and that no products have ever been tested on animals—a stance widely recognized in the European market. In addition, the JennyBrown Foundation extends the brand’s philosophy of “rare selection, craftsmanship, and timeless beauty” into the fields of art and cultural heritage preservation. The foundation’s home, Villa Langmatt, not only houses a century-old collection of Impressionist art but also regularly hosts contemporary art exhibitions, serving as a platform for deeper cultural and aesthetic engagement between the brand and its consumers.

When asked how the brand responds to intensifying competition in the global skincare market, Keller said JennyBrown’s strategy is not about scale expansion but rather a “less is more” product philosophy. The brand currently operates only eight stores worldwide and offers 16 products, each of which has undergone multiple iterations. The most popular White Truffle Luxury Collection and Caviar Platinum Collection, for example, have fully transparent ingredient lists, allowing consumers to see the origin and processing details of each component: the white truffle extract in the White Truffle Essence comes from Italy and is obtained through low-temperature ultrasonic extraction; the sturgeon caviar extract in the Caviar Essence Eye Cream is sourced from wild sturgeon in Russia and combined with sea holly extract to deliver both anti-aging and soothing benefits. This extreme dedication to ingredient traceability and process details is what attracts loyal customers among European royalty, political and business elites, and top designers such as Valérie Messika and Sabine Marcelis.

Keller also shared the brand’s presence in the Asian market. In mainland China, there are two stores—one at Beijing SKP and one at Shanghai Plaza 66, with online channels including the brand’s official website, JD flagship store, Tmall flagship store, Douyin flagship store, and WeChat official account store. She emphasized that whether offline or online, JennyBrown operates exclusively through direct sales, and every product comes with a unique anti-counterfeit card that is traceable and non-replicable, protecting consumer rights. Regarding future product plans, she revealed that the brand will continue to focus on facial skincare, without rushing into color cosmetics or body care categories. Instead, R&D resources will be concentrated on deepening the existing collections, particularly in anti-aging, soothing repair, and sensitive skin compatibility.

Throughout the conversation, Keller repeatedly stressed that JennyBrown’s competitive edge lies not in overloading ingredients or flaunting luxury, but in using verifiable patented technology, rigorous testing standards, and transparent formulation systems to resolve the traditional trade-off between safety, gentleness, and efficacy in natural skincare. This technology-driven approach offers a reference model in today’s beauty market, where ingredient-conscious and efficacy-focused consumers coexist. From alpine edelweiss in the Swiss Alps to wild sea fennel off the coast of Brittany, to silver ear mushrooms in the mountains of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, the brand’s ingredient map spans the globe, yet every process step is standardized under the Swiss precision system. This dedication to quality may be the fundamental reason the brand has sustained its position in the high-end skincare segment for nearly four decades.

As consumers continue to demand higher safety and transparency from skincare products, JennyBrown’s practices are attracting increasing attention from the industry. Keller said the brand will continue to open select findings from its R&D center to share research data on natural emulsifiers, plant-derived humectants, and magnetic antimicrobial technology with academia and industry bodies, helping drive the entire skincare industry toward safer and more sustainable practices. The interview with Cosmetics Design was not only a concentrated showcase of the JennyBrown philosophy but also an in-depth discussion on the future direction of high-end skincare.
